Need a hand with Lock In Japanese? Most questions are answered below. If yours is not, email us at support@lockinjapanese.com and a real person will get back to you.
Is the app out yet?
Not yet. Lock In Japanese is pre-launch, and the answers below describe the app as it will work at launch. If you want to know the moment it is ready to download, join the waitlist on the home page — we will write to you once, and not before.
Do I need an account or a subscription?
No account is required. Lock In Japanese works on your device without a login, and the core lock-screen learning is free. Some features are offered as a paid subscription through the App Store; you can use the app without one, and you can subscribe or not at any time.
How does the lock-screen word work?
A single Japanese word waits on your lock screen. You meet it every time you reach for your phone, before the scroll begins. Add the widget from your iPhone's lock-screen editor: press and hold the lock screen, tap Customize, choose Lock Screen, tap a widget slot, and pick Lock In Japanese. The word refreshes on a spaced-repetition schedule tuned to how you answer.
How does the Screen Time seal and quiz-unlock work?
When you seal a social app, opening it shows a seal instead of the app. Answer a short quiz on the words you have been learning; get them right and the seal lifts for a set window of time. When that window closes, the seal returns. This uses Apple's Screen Time / Family Controls framework, so which apps you seal and your usage stay on your device under Apple's privacy protections. Grant the Screen Time permission when the app asks, then choose which apps to seal in settings.
How do I restore purchases?
If you reinstall the app or switch devices, open Settings in Lock In Japanese and tap Restore Purchases. Purchases are tied to your Apple ID through the App Store, so make sure you are signed in with the same Apple ID you used to subscribe.
How do I cancel my subscription?
Subscriptions are managed by Apple, not by us. On your iPhone open Settings → [your name] → Subscriptions, select Lock In Japanese, and tap Cancel Subscription. You keep access until the end of the current billing period.
How do I delete my data?
Your learning progress and Screen Time data live on your device, so deleting the app removes them. This website only ever stores a waitlist email if you chose to give one. To have that deleted, email support@lockinjapanese.com and we will remove it. See our Privacy Policy for the full picture.
